IIT to Aid City Effort to Develop Building Green Project Inventory

Date

Chicago, IL — May 20, 2005 —

Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is working with the Chicago Department of Construction and Permits (DCAP) to create a comprehensive inventory of green building projects in Chicago. The inventory will support the city's ongoing effort to evaluate the role it plays in supporting environmentally friendly design and construction practices, and will become an important resource in developing Chicago's Green Building Code.

Selected projects from the inventory will be the subjects of detailed case studies. The studies will examine the opportunities and challenges for green design and construction in the City. The inventory and case studies will be made available to the public through the DCAP's website.

“The Building Green Inventory is another strong step toward implementing Mayor Daley's vision of making Chicago the most environmentally friendly city in the world,” said DCAP Executive Director Rafael Hernandez.

“IIT is very excited to be a part of this initiative with the city and our academic colleagues,” said Hamid Arastoopour, the Max McGraw Professor of Energy, Environment and Economics at IIT, and Dean of the Armour College of Engineering. “Establishing a path toward sustainability is a cornerstone of IIT's new Energy and Sustainability Institute and we believe that strong collaborative partnerships such as this will help us in our ultimate goal of creating a sustainable society.”

DCAP is also asking for the public's assistance in documenting how Chicagoans are successfully building within “green” standards. Building owners, developers, builders, architects, engineers and all interested citizens are encouraged to propose projects for the Building Green Inventory.

Projects with all levels of sustainability, from those with a few “green” features such as roofs, to those that reach beyond standard criteria for sustainability such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, will be included in the inventory.

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago are also involved in the project.
