Chicago, November 15, 2005—Illinois Institute of Technology Biomedical Engineering students Grace Lin and Shravani Pasupneti were named Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America Scholars at the ARCS (Achievement Awards for College Students) Scholarship Luncheon.

Lin, a senior and member of the Honors Program in Engineering and Medicine, is conducting retinal cell research with the goal of helping to identify new therapies to treat diabetes and central nervous system disorders, which damage retinal cells. She plans to attend medical school next year.

Pasupneti is involved in developing a rapid metabolic test to determine the functionality of islet cells prior to clinical transplantation. This research may lead to a promising treatment for patients afflicted with Type 1 diabetes.

The luncheon was held at the University Club of Chicago, with 170 guests in attendance. Twenty awards were presented, and a record amount of $147,000 was awarded in scholarships. The ARCS Foundation is a national organization that provides scholarships and fellowships for the country's most promising science, medical, and engineering students.
