IIT ELECTS EXELON CEO, 3 ALUMNI TO BOARD OF TRUSTEES

New members installed at Nov. 16 Board meeting

Adding experience, leadership and business expertise, Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) installed Exelon Corp. President and CEO John Rowe to its Board of Trustees at its meeting Nov. 16.

Joining him as new Trustees are risk management and investment specialist John Calamos, chairman of Calamos Asset Management, Motorola Executive Vice President Adrian Nemcek and management consultant Carl Spetzler, chairman of Strategic Decisions Group. Calamos and Spetzler are alumni of IIT, while Rowe serves on IIT’s International Board of Overseers and is co-chair of the Mies van der Rohe Society.

“We are pleased to introduce these three outstanding individuals as new members of the Board of Trustees,” said IIT President Lew Collens. “These individuals bring an enormous amount of leadership and talent to IIT. I am delighted to welcome them to our Board.”

Rowe has a long and distinguished history of pushing struggling power companies in positive directions as CEO of Central Maine Power, Unicom Corporation and Commonwealth Edison prior to the formation of Exelon. He worked with the Chicago law firm of Isham, Lincoln & Beale from 1970-1980, where he became a partner in 1978 and served as counsel to the Trustees of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad Company. He is a member of several boards, including Unum Provident Corporation, The Northern Trust Corporation, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Chicago Club, The Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, The Chicago Historical Society, The Field Museum, The Alumni Research Foundation, The American Enterprise Institute and the Illinois Chapter of the Nature Conservancy.

Calamos has pioneered investment strategies and techniques designed to help control risk during volatile market periods for numerous corporations. He is founder and chairman of Calamos Asset Management, Inc., and a member of the Investment Analyst Society of Chicago, as well as a frequent speaker at investment seminars and conferences. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics and an MBA in finance from IIT. He is a trustee of Benedictine University and a member of several organizations including the International Association of Financial Planners, Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry, Association of Investment Management Sales Executives, Institute Investment Management Consultant, Investment Management Consultant Association Clubs and Sky Haven (Aurora, Ill.) where he serves as president.

In addition to his work as an executive vice president at Motorola, Nemcek is also president and CEO of Global Telecom Solutions Sector, an Arlington Heights, Ill.-based company that provides cellular networks and iDEN systems globally. Nemcek has been with Motorola since 1970 in a variety of engineering and business management positions in private mobile communications. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from IIT and an MBA from Loyola University Chicago.

Spetzler founded Strategic Decisions Group, a management-consulting firm headquartered in Menlo Park, Calif., in 1981. He currently serves as its chairman. Spetzler has led strategy assignments for major corporations, which led to development of revolutionary new products, redirecting and restructuring major corporations and creating strategic alliances. He frequently speaks on strategy, innovation and decision and risk analysis and has testified for U.S. public and regulatory bodies, including Congress, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Spetzler earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, an MBA and a doctorate in business and economics from IIT. He serves as a member of the Stuart Graduate School of Business Board of Overseers.

The Board of Trustees formally welcomed the three new members at a ceremony during its meeting, Tuesday, Nov. 16, at The McCormick Tribune Campus Center.
