IIT, GTI Offer New Online Master’s Degree Program in Gas Engineering
Gas Technology Institute (GTI) today announced the launch of a Master's of Gas Engineering degree program, in partnership with the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT).
The ten-course program will be made accessible to students on the Internet, anywhere and at any time, through the IIT Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department. IIT is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The first three courses in the program will be offered in September 2003.
“The natural gas industry is well positioned to meet America’s energy needs for decades to come,” says John Riordan, president and CEO of GTI. “But to meet that goal, we’ll need engineers who understand not only the fundamentals of gas and energy engineering but also related environmental and economic issues. This flexible new Master’s program provides a solid foundation on which today’s students and professionals can advance their careers.”
Hamid Arastoopour, chairman of IIT’s Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department, says, “As we strive toward sustainability, we must search for the most cost-effective ways to continue the ongoing decarbonization of the energy system, enhance the efficiency of energy use, improve energy conservation, and minimize or eliminate wastes and pollutants.”
“The goal of this new IIT/GTI master’s degree program,” he continues, “is to educate a breed of engineers to address these challenging issues. The students are the real winners, because this new program provides a comprehensive IIT education without the traditional boundaries of the classroom. We have built this curriculum around the needs of full-time students and working professionals.”
GTI recommends that prospective students hold a degree in engineering (preferably chemical or mechanical), or in environmental science, chemistry, or physics. Applicants who want to continue to work full-time while pursuing their degrees will have up to six years in which to complete the program.
Students must take three core courses and choose seven electives from a list of nine. No research or thesis project is required.
Applications must be submitted no later than June 1 for the Fall semester. Additional information about the program can be requested by mail from the GTI Education Division, Master’s Program (mailing address: 1700 S. Mount Prospect Road, Des Plaines, IL 60018-1804); by e-mail (education@gastechnology.org), or from Mr. Michael Wolfe, Master’s Program Coordinator: phone 847-768-0886 or FAX 847-768-0842.
