IIT to Honor Famed Chinese Scientist
Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) will honor Chinese scientist, Dr. Lin Weigan, with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, during spring commencement ceremonies in Chicago, May 18, 2003.
The honorary IIT degree recognizes Lin’s half century of groundbreaking research and publication in journals throughout the world, his sponsorship of numerous students who have gone on to academic and industrial careers in China and the United States, and his leadership in the development of technological institutes in China.
Considered the “Father of Microwave” in China, Lin’s contributions have become important building blocks for modern telecommunications transmission. His many scientific achievements are in closed field theory, open field theory and image field theory.
Lin will receive the honor at IIT’s 129th Spring Commencement, Sunday, May 18, 2003. Graduation begins at 11 a.m. at the historic Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State Street. He will also spend time on the IIT campus May 16 and 17, 2003, visiting with students and faculty. Lin will be available for one-on-one news media interviews on May 16, 2003. following a 3 p.m. seminar and reception at Siegel Hall Auditorium, 3301 S. Dearborn Street.
Currently a professor at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, he has published more than 100 papers in respected journals. In China, he received a National Science Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the National Education Commission Award and a National Teaching Excellence Award. Lin is a member of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Academy of Electromagnetic Science in the United States.
He holds a B.S. from National Tsinghua University, China’s premier technological university, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. Lin has sponsored 60 Ph.D. students and has also sent outstanding graduate students to IIT.
