Children’s Book Drive – Through August 10

Did you know that…

  • In low-income neighborhoods there is one book for every 300 kids?
  • 80% of preschool and after-school programs serving low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for their children?
  • The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print?

Here’s your chance to do something about those and other staggering statistics.

Beginning this week, you will see collection boxes in the IIT Tower and MTCC for Bernie’s Book Bank, a not-for-profit organization in Lake Bluff, Illinois, that collects, sorts, and distributes age-appropriate books to kids in the Chicagoland area who otherwise wouldn’t have any. Since 2009, Bernie’s has distributed 12,454,943 books to at-risk children, serving 300,000 kids annually.

Bernie’s is looking for new or gently-used books for children ranging in age from newborn to sixth grade. Please no textbooks, workbooks, or reference books.

Please do what you can to support this great cause.
