Illinois Institute of Technology Student Branch of Arquitectos Holds Annual Show April 20
Chicago, IL — April 12, 2001 —
On Friday, April 20, IIT’s student branch of Arquitectos—a group of Latino architecture students—will hold its annual show of student work. The work will encompass architectural drawings and models, as well as paintings and sculptures by Latino students at IIT.
The show will kick off with a lecture by architect Carlos Zapata. Zapata, of the Boston-based firm Wood & Zapata, helped design plans for renovating Chicago’s Soldier Field. The renovation calls for placing a 63,000-seat stadium within the historic colonnades of Soldier Field.
The Zapata lecture starts at 5:30 p.m., and the show begins afterward and runs until 10:00 p.m. Both the lecture and the show will take place at S.R. Crown Hall on IIT’s Main Campus, located at 3360 S. State Street.
There are 12 members in Arquitectos, says Lloyd Fojas, IIT Arquitectos president. The group is 12 years old and holds a show of student work each year. “This year, we wanted to reach out to students in other disciplines and see if we could find the artists at IIT,” says Fojas. He partnered with members of IIT’s LIFE group (Latinos Involved in Further Education) to mine the artistic talents of the Latino population at IIT. Fojas has collected work from about 25 artists and is excited by the range of submissions.
The show will be accompanied by music by Alien Sound, IIT’s student sound production group.
