International Expert in Radiation Monitoring Gives Guest Lecture to Health Physics Students
On September 26, 2013, Craig Yoder presented an online guest lecture on “External Radiation Dose Monitoring” to students in the Radiation Dosimetry course, a required course for completion of the IIT Master of Health Physics program. Yoder, an internationally known expert in radiation monitoring, is senior vice president of global technology for Landauer Corporation, the world’s largest supplier of personnel dosimetry services, and serves as a member of the IIT Master of Health Physics advisory board. His lecture covered the history of the transition from film to thermoluminescent dosimetry to optically stimulated luminescence technology, a transition in which he has played a lead role. He also explained the standards, quantities and units, and regulatory requirements involved in the modern practice of personnel dosimetry as part of operational health physics programs. Yoder is a member of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) and former President of the Council on Ionizing Radiation Measurements and Standards (CIRMS). He has served on several national and international committees to develop dosimetry standards and was a member of the National Research Council committee that examined the accuracy of film badge measurements made during atmospheric nuclear weapons testing. Yoder earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in bionucleonics at Purdue University and received a B.S. degree in pre-medicine from Davidson College. He is certified in comprehensive health physics by the American Board of Health Physics.
