Lohan Anderson Wins Auction to Break S.R. Crown Hall Window

Date

Chicago, IL — April 25, 2005 —

Chicago architecture firm Lohan Anderson was the high bidder on eBay to smash a window at Illinois Institute of Technology’s National Historic Landmark S.R. Crown Hall.

Lohan Anderson co-founder Dirk Lohan’s grandfather, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, designed Crown Hall. Lohan will wield the bashing hammer on behalf of Lohan Anderson.

IIT’s Mies van der Rohe Society auctioned the privilege of breaking a 10-foot plate glass window to kick-off both a major restoration and the 50th anniversary celebration of a building that is universally regarded as one of the most important works of the 20th century and, indeed, in the history of architecture.

The smashing will be the centerpiece of a May 17 “Smash Bash” fundraiser for the Society’s efforts to restore Mies’ buildings at the core of IIT’s campus.

eBay posted 55 bids, topping out with Lohan Anderson’s winner of $2,705 on Friday morning (April 22). Bidding began April 15.

“It is an honor to be a part of Crown Hall’s restoration and its 50th anniversary celebration,” Lohan said.

“As a longtime IIT supporter, this means very much to me. But, it means even more on a personal level.”

The pane of glass to be broken is not original to the building. Nearly all of original glass was removed in a 1970s re-fitting.
