MSED Presents at the SAARMSTE 2016 South African Conference

IIT’s Mathematics and Science Education sent a team to the Southern African Association for Research in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (SAARMSTE) Conference, January 12-17, 2016, in Pretoria, South Africa. The conference, “Researching a Sustainable Environment and Sustaining Research in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education,” was held at Tshwane University of Technology Arts Campus. SAARMSTE is the premier research conference on the African continent.

Faculty members Norman Lederman, Distinguished Professor, and Associate Professor and Director of Teacher Education Judith S. Lederman, along with Ph.D. student Kelly Shepard, presented "The Effects of Teaching Science Terminology on Elementary Students’ Understandings of Science Concepts.” The Ledermans also presented research titled “International Study of Seventh Grade Students’ Understandings of Scientific Inquiry.” Norman Lederman was also a plenary speaker at the Writing Clinic of the SAARMSTE. The clinic is conducted annually to build faculty and graduate students' capacity to publish research in international research journals.

SAARMSTE is a Southern African association dedicated to the advancement of research in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (MSTE). The aim of SAARMSTE is to advance research in mathematics, science and technology education in Southern Africa by fostering a sense of community among researchers; promoting research to improve and develop MSTE programs in response to current and future needs; assisting in the development of research skills of people interested in entering the MSTE field; and developing further expertise in that field by means of organizing workshops, short courses and exchange visits.
