Hands-on Projects for Students in Sustainability

Monitoring Atmospheric Pollution in the Great Lakes Region

Students in the M.S. in Sustainability Analytics and Management (SAM) program have opportunities to work on a long-running environmental research project, the Great Lakes Integrated Atmospheric Deposition Network (IADN), to monitor pollution in Great Lakes air and precipitation. Over time, this project has produced significant information for both scientists and policy makers.

IADN is a collaboration between the United States and Canada designed to measure and evaluate more than 150 pollutant concentrations in the atmosphere (airborne vapor, airborne particles, and precipitation) at a lake-wide level of detail. A network of stations in the two countries monitors concentrations of persistent toxic chemicals in Great Lakes air and precipitation, as well as gathering valuable information about levels of toxic substances in urban air and precipitation.

Since 1997, one of the monitoring sites has been at Illinois Tech under the supervision of Associate Professor Nasrin R. Khalili. Students can apply for training and part-time jobs with the IADN.
