Armour College Students Learn the Importance of Security

Date

On April 16, 2014, Armour College of Engineering students attended a seminar that earned them Engineering Themes credit in Security. The seminar opened with a lecture presented by Dr. Anatol Longinow, an Adjunct Professor in the CAEE Department at Armour College and one of his Ph.D. students, Federico A. Nunez-Moreno.

Dr. Longinow believes that infrastructure security needs to be a priority to ensure that we are prepared for a terrorist attack or environmental disaster. Dr. Longinow and Mr. Nunez-Moreno discussed research they have been conducting on the security of bridges in Chicago. Using computer models they assessed the weak points of bridges and devised solutions that make the bridges much less vulnerable to attack.

Dr. Longinow invited a guest speaker, Lauris Freidenfelds, the Director of Security at Rush Medical Center in Chicago, to share his expertise with the students. Mr. Freidenfelds reviewed the steps they take at Rush in order to prepare a contingency plan in the case of a major disaster.

The CAEE department at Armour College offers a class taught by Dr. Longinow, CAE 437 –Homeland Security Concerns in Engineering Systems, that will expand on the topics discussed during the seminar. Throughout the course, Dr. Longinow invites guest speakers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) as well as individuals from fire protection engineering companies to ensure that students are learning from experts in the field.
