An Illinois Institute of Technology graduate student in the School of Applied Technology was recently awarded a $5,000 scholarship from PMMI, the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, through the PMMI Foundation.

Hitesh Moryani, a student in the food process engineering master’s program, received the food processing scholarship, which is given to one student attending a four-year PMMI Education partner school, such as Illinois Tech. He earned the award by demonstrating a commitment to excellence in the processing industry and by achieving a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Moryani, who is conducting research under the supervision of Assistant Professor of Food Science and Nutrition Kathiravan Krishnamurthy on the application of a novel pulsed LED light system for inactivation of microorganisms, was one of three students who were awarded the scholarship from the electrical engineering technology, mechanical engineering, and food process engineering disciplines.

“These students represent the great potential of the next generation workforce to transform the packaging and processing industry,” PMMI Senior Education Manager Kate Fiorianti says in a press release on the organization’s website. “The application criteria, which includes notable industry involvement, means we are recognizing the best and brightest and giving them resources to transfer academic success into professional excellence.
