IIT President and Professor of Chemical Engineering John L. Anderson Elected Councilor of National Academy of Engineering

Date

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) recently elected Illinois Institute of Technology President John L. Anderson as a member of its governing Council. The NAE also elected a new foreign secretary and three additional councilors. All terms begin July 1, 2015.

Newly elected to serve a four-year term as NAE’s foreign secretary is Ruth A. David, recently retired president and chief executive officer of Analytic Services Inc. (ANSER), an independent, not-for-profit, public service research institution that provides research and analytic support on national and transnational issues. David previously served as counselor from 2007 to 2013. She succeeds Venkatesh Narayanamurti, Benjamin Peirce Professor of Technology and Public Policy at Harvard and director of the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program at the Harvard Kennedy School, who has served one four-year term as foreign secretary and chose not to seek re-election.

Re-elected to a second term as counselor are Anita K. Jones, university professor emerita at the University of Virginia; and Richard H. Truly, retired vice admiral in the United States Navy and retired director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Also elected is incumbent councilor Wanda A. Austin, president, and chief executive officer of The Aerospace Corporation. All terms are three years.

Retiring councilor Arnold F. Stancell completed six continuous years of service, the maximum allowed under the Academy’s bylaws.

The National Academy of Engineering was established in 1964 under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences as a parallel organization of outstanding engineers. It is autonomous in its administration and in the selection of its members, sharing with NAS the responsibility for advising the federal government.
