Judith Lederman Delivers Keynote at 2015 Chilean Inaugural Science Education Conference

Date

Judith S. Lederman, associate professor and director of teacher education, delivered the opening keynote address at the inaugural meeting of the Chilean Science Education Society (Sociedad Chilena de Educacion Cientifica, SChEC). The conference, “Science Teaching Challenges,” convened November 5 -7, 2015 throughout Chile.

Lederman gave her lecture, “Scientific Literacy: A Shared Goal for All Science Educators,” in Santiago, Chile, the first conference venue. The research meeting then moved to Valparaiso, Chile, where Norman G. Lederman, distinguished professor of mathematics and science education, was keynote speaker the final day of the conference. He presented “Extending our Knowledge of Teaching, Learning and Research on Science Education: Handbook of Research on Science Education, Volume II.”

Current SChEC President Claudia Vergara, Universidad Alberto Hurtado, Santiago, Chile, and Hernan Cofre, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso, Chile, were both visiting scholars at IIT during the 2012-2013 academic year. Inspired by their research at IIT and other international research organizations, they decided to organize South American scholars and teachers. The Ledermans travelled to Chile to assist Vergara and Cofre with the formation of the society. SChEC was subsequently launched in November 2013.

The mission of SChEC is to improve the quality of science education in Chile and influence decision-making through investigation and education practice in all grade levels and both formal and informal education. Additional SChEC information can be found at the SChEC website.
