Math Education Team Chosen to Present at Two Regional Teacher Conferences

Date

An Illinois Tech mathematics education team led by Gorjana Popovic, senior lecturer, will present their research on the role of high school students’ conversations in learning mathematics at two upcoming regional conferences.

Popovic, Ph.D. student Susie Morrissey, and Lamont Holifield, math teacher at Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men, will present “Student Conversations about Mathematics in Urban Classrooms” at National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) regional conferences on October 21-23, 2015, in Atlantic City, NJ, and November 18-20, 2015, in Nashville, Tennessee.

The team used the LiveScribe Pen in high school classrooms to document students’ conversations while the students solved problems in small groups. At the conferences, the Illinois Tech team will share math problems they used to engage students in discussions about mathematics as well as the associated student conversations. The workshop highlights that classroom conversation aids in achieving conceptual understanding.

Founded in 1920, NCTM is the world’s largest mathematics education organization, with 80,000 members. NCTM is the public voice of mathematics education, supporting teachers to ensure equitable mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students through vision, leadership, professional development, and research.
