Nayar Prize Finalists Featured in Chicago Tribune for Crime Prediction Initiative with Elgin Police
Miles Wernick, Motorola Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Director of Medical Imaging Research Center (MIRC), and Professor of Biomedical Engineering; Yongyi Yang, Harris Perlstein Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering; and Lori Andrews, Distinguished Professor of Law and Director of Institute for Science, Law, and Technology at Chicago-Kent College of Law were featured in a Chicago Tribune article describing their partnership with the Elgin, Illinois Police Department.
The group was recently named finalists in the Nayar Prize II at Illinois Tech. The team will be working with the department to deploy a flexible, new model for crime prevention. Their algorithm looks for patterns in crime data in order to identify high-risk individuals that can be offered counseling or other services in order to prevent crime.
