New Course Available This Summer: ENGR 411-01 - Fabrication Practices for Engineers

A brand new general engineering course is made available for degree and non-degree students who may need to fabricate or direct the construction of mechanical components throughout their time at Illinois Tech and their career.

Open to undergraduate and graduate students, this course will provide an overview of standard shop practices, machining theory, measurement, mechanical drawing, dimensioning requirements, tolerances, material selection, fastener selection, and shop safety. Basic hands-on instruction will be given on the proper use and complimentary capabilities of standard machine tools such as hand tools, drill press, lathe, mill, band saw, CNC machines, laser cutters, and 3D printers. Students will fabricate a variety of parts that will demonstrate the capabilities of individual machine tools.

After completion of the course, students will be able to safely use machine tools to make basic parts as well as make informed decisions about the design and construction machined components.

Pre-requisities: Enrolled in engineering program or prior consent of instructor.
