Orgel and Research Team Play Leading Roles in Crystallography Conference in Chicago

Joseph Orgel and his research team will play leading roles at the upcoming Second International Conference on Applied Crystallography October 16-17 in Chicago. Orgel is an associate professor of biology and biomedical engineering and the associate director of BioCAT (Biophysics Collaborative Access Team) X-ray facility at Argonne National Laboratory. He will give a keynote speech on how X-ray diffraction reveals the relationship between traumatic brain injury and mechanical load tolerance and the vertebrate identity of fossilized T-rex bone. A member of the conference organizing committee, he also has been named an Honorable Guest and will speak at the opening ceremony on October 16.

Rama S. Madhurapantula (BIOL Ph.D. ’15), who did his dissertation with Orgel and is currently a senior research associate at Illinois Tech, will give a talk, “Non-covalent interactions that control the self-assembly of organic molecular crystals” and co-chairs two sessions.

Crystallography 2017 is a symposium for scientists, engineers, directors of companies and students in the field of materials science to meet and share their knowledge. The theme of conference is “Crystallography of today is the innovation of tomorrow.”
