Students Inducted into UPE International Honor Society

In the roll call of college majors, the computing and information disciplines may be among the newest but already have an international honor society that is attracting a growing number of highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students. On May 3 Upsilon Pi Epsilon inducted students from Illinois Tech’s Department of Computer Science and for the first time, students from the university’s Department of Information Technology and Management.

“We were able to induct quite a few ITM students,” notes Ray Trygstad, industry professor of ITM, about the 17 recent inductees from his program. “We are delighted with the expanded opportunities for networking and increased interaction with other students in the computing disciplines available to our students through membership in Upsilon Pi Epsilon.”

The May 3 event marks the fourth induction ceremony for the Illinois Tech chapter. Students invited to join the ranks not only excel in the classroom but also have shown a demonstrated ability in research and industry. First organized at Texas A&M University in 1967, UPE is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and has received endorsements from the two largest computer organizations in the world, the Association for Computing Machinery and the IEEE Computer Society. Upsilon Pi Epsilon is also a charter member of the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies.
