Career Services workshops are designed to provide a sequential path through career development knowledge and the skills essential for success in the job search. Below are a few topics that we can cover when visiting your classroom or student organization.
Navigating the Working World
In this workshop, students will get a comprehensive introduction to norms and practices of business culture in the United States, including communications etiquette; professional and personal boundaries; and what to write (and not write) in an email, cover letter, and/or résumé.
Crafting Your Pitch
A vital, and often overlooked, part of the job search is networking. Learn how to converse professionally with employers and contacts at career fairs and other networking opportunities. This workshop will help you know what to say to employers to sell your skills, settle your nerves, and put you in the mindset of an employer.
Designing Your Professional Profile
Presenting yourself in writing can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to catching the eye of potential employers, and it is much more of an art than a science. This workshop is designed to help you design résumé and cover letters—both of which are still essential to the job search—while also thinking about your social media profile, the most important being LinkedIn.
Finding Your Market
You’ve got your pitch down and your résumé is pristine. Now what? Don’t get caught in the online application trap; this workshop will help you to efficiently research employers and determine who is worth your time and who isn’t.
Building Your Network
You can’t start networking unless you know where and how to network! This workshop will give you the tools to connect with contacts and to conduct informational interviews—opportunities that give you a feel for what a career or company is like by learning from an employee's daily activities, without the pressure that is so often present in a typical job interview, but that can lead to opportunities for the real deal down the road.
Landing The Job
All your hard work has led to a full-fledged job interview! Join us to discuss strategies to prepare for the interview and to negotiate salary after an offer has been made. Also covered is an overview of typical United States benefits packages and how to weigh job offers beyond the base salary.
