If you are either an F-1 or J-1 student, you will automatically be enrolled in the Illinois Institute of Technology Student Health Insurance Plan at the time you register for courses. The charge for this coverage will be added to your tuition bill. For detailed information about the Student Health Insurance Plan, visit the Student Health and Wellness Center’s Insurance page.
F-1 and J-1 students are not permitted to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan. You should not purchase any health insurance before coming to campus as it cannot be used while you are a student at Illinois Tech.
Health Insurance Coverage for J-1 Exchange Visitors
J-1 students/scholars and their respective J-2 dependents are required to maintain appropriate health insurance coverage for the duration of their program. The United States government established minimum levels of health insurance coverage in order to protect exchange visitors and their families from the high cost of health insurance in the U.S.
All J-1 students/scholars must show verification of the following:
- $100,000 per accident or illness, with a deductible of not more than $500
- Repatriation of remains, in the event of death, in the amount of $25,000
- Expenses associated with medical evacuation to your home country or to your country of permanent residence in the amount of $50,000
