A.4 Research Personnel Appointments

Policy No. A. 4.00

Date of Issue 7/2/2014

It is the policy of the university to appoint research personnel to support faculty research activities. This policy sets forth the terms and conditions of employment for these personnel.

4.01

Senior Research Associate
Appointment as a senior research associate is made by the dean or his/her designee to an individual who holds an earned doctorate and who possesses special qualifications for making significant professional contributions to the research projects in which he or she is engaged. This is a full-time academic appointment. Although not a faculty member, a senior research associate is ordinarily considered equivalent in rank, fringe benefits and privileges to an assistant professor. An individual holding this appointment is eligible to participate in teaching activities on a part-time basis. An appointment is made for a specified period, is renewable annually, and carries no implication of a continuing relationship with the university and no provision for earning tenure. In general, the maximum period for such appointment is five years, although in appropriate cases this may be extended.

4.02

Research Associate
A research associate holds a similar appointment to that described above. An appointment is made to an individual whose highest degree is the master’s degree and who is not pursuing a graduate degree program at the university. A research associate is ordinarily considered equivalent in rank, fringe benefits and privileges to an instructor.

It is the responsibility of the department recommending the appointment to ascertain, in consultation with the International Office, the eligibility for employment including ability to produce appropriate (or required) authorization to work or visa status documentation. To be eligible for benefits, the appointment must be for paid full-time employment for a period of more than six months.
