Here are just a few simple and practical tips to help you stay safe on or off campus.
Be Smart With Your Smartphone
- Save the Public Safety emergency number, 312.808.6363 to your contact.
- Register for IIT Alerts to stay informed.
- Download the Rave Guardian App (aka Illinois Tech Safety App), for added security.
- Keep your phone and other devices out of sight while walking to reduce risk of theft
- If using headphones, set them to transparent mode or at a low volume to stay aware of your surroundings
Walk Smart
- Walk in groups when possible, as there is protection in numbers
- Stay in well-lit areas and plan your route ahead of time
- Stay aware of your surroundings with your head up and your phone out of sight
- Change up your jogging route and times to stay unpredictable
- If you suspect someone is following you, change your direction, cross the street, or vary your pace, and call Public Safety or 911 if off-campus
- Use the Public Safety Escort Services if you feel unsafe
Ride Smart
- Avoid using your phone and other devices while driving.
- On public transit:
- Choose a seat near the front
- Stay awake and keep belongings close
- Familiarize yourself with schedules and routes
- If using headphones, set them to transparent mode or at a low volume to stay aware of your surroundings
- Use the Public Safety Escort Services if you feel unsafe or are unable to drive.
Stay Connected
- Use the Safety Timers feature in the Rave Guardian app to share your departure, destination, and expected arrival time with a family member, friend or roommate.
- Know where the emergency call stations around campus.
